Villagers benefit from tourism

Far-flung islands in the Lau group have benefitted enormously from the mass return of tourists to Fiji.

This has been made possible by Captain Cook Cruises via its 11-day cruise visit on board MV Reef Endeavour to remote islands in Lau and Kadavu.

Tourism Fiji chief executive Brent Hill said they were pleased to note an increased interest in the Lau Group cruises as well as in Yasawa and the North.

“Tourism Fiji is working closely with Captain Cook Cruises and we’re really pleased to see the interest,” Mr Hill said.

“The key is that Captain Cook and their team work very closely with the villages to design trips that benefit villagers, and are sustainable and beneficial.

“The feedback from tourists is they love this cultural, authentic experience the most.”

According to Captain Cook Cruises, the MV Reef Endeavour is a small cruise ship that caters for 130 passengers over four accommodation levels.
