In need of a well-deserved holiday filled with relaxation, sunshine, and incredible nature? Fiji could be the destination for you.

With so many things to see and do, planning your first trip can be a little overwhelming. But don’t worry – we’ve put together a guide to ensure that you get the most out of your first Fiji experience.

1. BE PREPARED TO SEE BEAUTY ALL AROUND YOU

Palm trees, white sand beaches, turquoise waters, waterfalls, and an abundance of coral and fish-filled lagoons are just some of the amazing characteristics Fiji is lucky to feature. So don’t take it for granted – do your best to explore and seize every minute of your holiday.

To make the most of your experience, book a day trip like this Fiji Sailing Adventure.

2. THERE ARE ONLY TWO SEASONS IN FIJI

When it comes to the weather, there are only two seasons in Fiji – warm and warmer – so get ready to sweat! Temperatures usually range between 26ºC – 31ºC.

From April to October, the temperatures are more mild, whereas November to May is characteristic of hot, humid weather. Heavy storms are also typical in this time of year. Ultimately, the season you choose to go will depend on what kind of trip you would like to have – do you want to spend your time relaxing in a resort, or do you want to get out and hike, snorkel and swim?

3. GET YOUR TASTE OF FIJIAN FOOD

Eating out in Fiji is a multicultural experience that’s bound to send your taste buds on a trip – whether you’re eating in your hotel, or in town. Fijian food is a mix between flavours from India, Korea, China, Japan, and the South Pacific Islands, so you can’t go wrong there.

Fresh seafood is the country’s specialty and can be found in almost every menu of the islands’ restaurants. Additionally, lots of hotels and resorts will have specific culinary themed nights – Fijian feasts, or beachside BBQ’s. You may be lucky enough to experience Fiji’s famous BBQ, the lovo, an underground oven of heated rocks cooking a variety of foods (especially meat) wrapped in banana leaves.

4. STAY HEALTHY ON YOUR TRIP

Thankfully, Fiji is free from malaria, yellow fever and any major tropical diseases that are endemic to many tropical countries – so no need to worry about that yellow fever vaccine. Plus, Fiji has a very efficient and professional medical system (even though some locals still practice herbal-only remedies).

Whilst it’s recommended to purchase bottled water when going anywhere overseas, tap water is safe to drink in Suva, Lautoka and other major towns.

5. ESSENTIALS TO TICK OFF THE BUCKET LIST

There are so many things to do in Fiji that we could create a list a mile long… But there are a few things which you just can’t miss.

Diving and snorkelling

Fiji is globally known for having some of the best diving spots in the world. Fijian reefs are in pristine condition and remain undamaged, unlike many other parts of the world. Fiji features stunning diverse and unique marine wildlife. Diving and snorkelling is in top of the list, and an attraction you absolutely cannot miss.

Water sports

Outside of diving and snorkelling, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy on Fiji’s vast oceans. Never been stand up paddle boarding? Fiji is the best place to make your debut. Prefer to stay seated as you cruise out on the water? Rent a kayak for the day.

Enjoy a lovo feast

You simply have to experience one of Fiji’s traditional forms of cooking – a lovo feast. Cooked in the earth (like a ‘hangi’ in New Zealand), the taste is like a barbeque, only a little more smoked. And while sampling the taste of the food from the lovo pit is an enjoyable experience, watching the preparation of a lovo is almost as much fun.

GET TO KNOW THE ISLANDS

Fiji is one nation comprised by many, many islands, and while of course you’re not going to be able to see them all, you can certainly try. Different islands of Fiji will offer you different experiences – for example, Suva is full of culture, while the Yasawa Islands are composed of picturesque beaches. Just remember that each region is magical and has its own little charms.

To get to know the islands more, book a charter or boat hire.
